Palestra: Use of Health Care Data to Improve Health Care Quality, Cost and Outcomes

In the U.S.A., data collected through a variety of sources including, but not limiting to,  insurance administration, electronic medical records, patients survey, and, government vital registration, are analyzed and linked to create powerful tools to measure the quality, cost and outcomes of health care.  Optum is the company that owns the largest health care data assets in the U.S.  The purpose of this presentation is to describe the variety of data sources that Optum owns, and how data is used to enable research and evaluation for health care delivery.

HungChing Chan, VP of Health Care Economics and Analytics with Optum International, has more than 20 years of experience in analyzing health plan performance data. She held several positions within United Health Group in the last nine years, including VP of Optum Medical Informatics Consulting and VP of Clinical Business Analysis. Prior to UHG, she worked for two large health plans in the Midwest leading research and analytic teams.  She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in public health from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and she is a Ph.D. candidate in Health Services Research, Policy, and Administration from University of Minnesota..

HungChing’s areas of expertise are: health care cost trend analysis, measurement of health care quality and provider performance, outcome evaluation and ROI analysis of clinical programs, design and development of population health management strategy, customer and operational reporting solutions, evidence based compliance, and pharmacy cost and utilization management.
